Australian Shepard avocados are now officially in season, replacing the beloved Hass until early May. But when it comes to choosing a ripe one at the shops, are we doing it all wrong?
Unlike Hass, which turn purple as they ripen, Shepard avocados are always green, making it so important that we know what to look for when choosing a ripe one.
Avocado growers say it’s simple – stop squeezing them.
People can get a little too handsy and squeeze the avocado all over, which bruises it and turns the flesh under the skin black – and no one likes that surprise when they cut into their avo! Australian avocado growers have shared their tips on how to pick the perfect Shepard this season
1. Press gently at the stem (at the top) to check the ripeness of an
avocado.
2. If it gives a little, it’s ready to eat!
3. If it’s hard, leave for 1-3 days on the bench and keep checking.
4. Speed up the ripening process by placing unripe avocados in a
paper bag with an apple or banana for a few days.
5. Refrigerating a whole, ripe avocado will maintain the optimum
ripeness for 2-3 days.
6. One serve of avocado is a quarter of a large avocado or a third
of a small one.
7. One piece of fruit can go a long way. You can get several dishes
from just one piece of fruit, making every meal better.
