Sports lovers have the chance to see some of the world’s best athletes when they go head-to-head at the Go for 2&5 Perth Track Classic on Saturday (February 22).

World-class talents including the Dominican Republic’s Olympic hurdles gold medallist, Felix Sanchez, and reigning US world 400m champion, LaShawn Merritt, will  bid to qualify for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games at WA Athletics Stadium in Mt Claremont.

More than 160 athletes will take part in the event including Australia’s own Olympic golden girl Sally Pearson, Western Australian world championship javelin silver medallist Kim Mickle and the Australian men’s 4x400m relay team.

Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the Perth Track Classic is one of the pinnacle events on Western Australia’s sporting calendar and a must-see for sports fans.
“Rarely do sports fans have the opportunity to see some of the best athletes from across the globe on home soil.
“The Perth Track Classic promises spectators an exciting night of competition. The road to Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games starts now.”

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said WA recently unveiled its new world-class Mondo track at WA Athletics Stadium, which will be used for the event.

“Mondo was the surface of choice for the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, providing the best surface for our environment and a world-class facility for all the athletes here to compete,” Mr Waldron said.
Tickets for the event are available through Ticketmaster.
