How to get through Christmas celebrations with your sanity in check

The Christmas season is just as stressful as moving jobs or into a new home. It’s rough. We romanticise it all year round, though, don’t we? Santa is coming, so are those cheesy Christmas movies we can’t resist, delicious foods, and time with family. We tend to forget about all of the rest that comes with it. We get so focused on making everyone else happy, though, we often forget to look after ourselves. So, here is how you can coast through Christmas and keep your sanity.

Be mindful. Yes, even during the holiday season. Anxiety and stress will creep up on you and it’s easy to let it happen. So, do yourself a favour and keep healthy snacks and drinks in the house. That way when you feel the urge to snack you have a healthy option to snack on. Sugary foods only increase your stress – let those be treats.

Make a List. Yes, do check it twice. Write out a list of what you have to do and another list of what you’d like to do. Look at your lists through a critical lens and ask yourself if you really have to do those things or you’re just doing it because you’ve always done it. If your heart isn’t in it, don’t do it!

Commitments. Whatever you do- do not overcommit yourself. You can’t please everyone so please do not try to. It starts to become work when you feel like you have to attend every dinner or Christmas party that you’ve been invited to. You have to decide when to attend and when you need a break. The season may be short, but it doesn’t take long to hit burnout stages.

Prioritise. Make sure to take time out for self-care. The only way you can do that, though, is to prioritise. The last thing you want to do is run yourself ragged and resent your family for it. Look after your needs!
