Action Plan for Ageing Population

Last week the Victorian Government released Seniors Count!, the Seniors Participation Action Plan 2014-19, designed to help deal with the complexities of an ageing population.

With people now living more active, longer lives than ever before, the Victorian Government has dedicated $5 million over plan’s life to support its delivery.

Developed by the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Senior Victorians chaired by Gerard Mansour, the action plan will set a new course for ageing in Victoria and, over the next five years, will; support the mature age workforce; improve understanding of health and ageing; create more age-friendly communities; and promote life planning for seniors.

Additionally, individuals continuing with full-time work after turning 60 will be eligible for the new Seniors Business Discount Card in 2015.

Much of the Seniors Count! plan is aimed at inspiring change in the community in the form of developing more positive attitudes towards, and greater respect for older people. Governments, too, are being encouraged to address the ageing population and take appropriate measures.
