Be Security Conscious at Christmas – it’s the Worst Time for Thefts

Christmas is a time to celebrate- but it is also a time to be extra vigilant with insurance statistics showing this is the worst time for thefts.

RAA’s Insurance Claims Manager Hayley Cain says the average number of burglary claims climbs by approximately 15 per cent from November through to January.

“We are already seeing an increase in claims as we head into Christmas and I urge homeowners to make sure their newly purchased mobile devices, electrical goods, jewellery and other valuables don’t end up under a burglar’s Christmas tree this year.

“We also see an increase in car park claims but this may be due to the fact there are more shoppers out and about during the Christmas shopping rush.

“Ideally, don’t leave your shopping or luggage in the car; but if you need to unload, put them in the boot or hide them behind the seat so they don’t attract attention.

“You also need to be careful if you put your parcels down for a minute. “It’s easy for thieves to walk away with a generic brand shopping bag or wrapped parcel as they blend right in with all the other busy shoppers,” Mr Cain said.

Another question often worth askingi s whether recently purchased presents are covered by insurance.

Ms Cain says it depends on your policy as most home and content insurance only covers contents while they are on your property.

Accidental damage cover may cover items damaged or lost outside of the home.
