Clear your space and become more conscious in the process: Most of us buy more than we need and our spaces are full of clothes, books and products that other people would enjoy. Get rid of things you no longer use. A key way to know is if you haven’t worn it in 6 months, chances are you won’t wear it again. Listing these sorts of items on Gumtree will also make you more aware of the items you’re purchasing and make you more aware of what you don’t need to become a more conscious shopper.

Be descriptive: Take a few extra minutes to craft your listings to get the absolute top dollar for your item. Describe the product you’re selling, including its features, history and reasons for selling the item. The more information you provide, the more likely you are to sell the product at the price you want.

Set a reasonable price: Setting the right prices for your products is key to selling successfully, but determining the value of your items can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task. Doing some simple desk research will help you manage: Before listing your item, have a thorough look around to see what the average listing is for similar items.

Happy snaps: Generally speaking, the better the photo the better your listing will perform. Make sure you take photos with plenty of light, ensure the pictures focus sharply on the item for sale, if there is any minor damage to your item consider a close-up to show the mark. If you are selling clothing, share some old photos of you in the item or put the garment on, as people like to envision how it will look on them.

Be clear about your terms: Make sure to be very specific about your terms and conditions to ensure a smooth sales process. Do you allow people to try items on first, or do you provide refunds? Make sure to include this information in your ad.

Prepare your items: If you are looking to sell clothes, make sure you wash them, thoroughly check them for stains, missing buttons, pilling, rips and broken zips, and make any repairs, if necessary, ahead of listing them online.
