ANZAC Ted | Teaching a new generation about Anzacs

Anzac ted Children's story

With the day of departure of the first Anzacs having now passed its 100th anniversary, there’s no better time to teach or remind the new generation of the soldiers’ bravery, camaraderie and sacrifice than with a children’s book, Anzac Ted.

Written and illustrated by first-time author Belinda Landsberry, the book tells the story of a little’s boy’s teddy bear – well worn, with one less eye and ear – that is passed down to him from his grandfather.

That teddy, of course, is Anzac Ted, and via his experiences accompanying the soldiers that went to war, he tells his story of what he and they went through and how he comforted them.

Anzac Ted‘s message is important. Ted, a metaphor, never received a medal and he’s not the latest kid’s gadget, but he is still a hero:

‘They’d see a hero, plain as day,
who sits upon my bed.
A hero who saved me and you.
His name is … Anzac Ted.’

Landberry’s book, brimming with her watercolour illustrations, highlights the importance of the everyday hero and, notably, makes this lesson easily accessible and understandable to children.
