Susan Sarandon Has “Nothing Good To Say” About Woody Allen

Susan Sarandon

Over the weekend actress Susan Sarandon took part in the Women in Motion talk at the Cannes Film festival, where she declared she had “nothing good to say” about director Woody Allen and his dubious past.

Sarandon was in discussion with Geena Davis when she addressed Allen’s past accusations of sexual abuse, saying, “I think he sexually assaulted a child and I don’t think that’s right … I don’t want to go there”.

The comments were made after the controversy surrounding Allen’s past were brought up again when his son, Ronan Farrow, published an article in The Hollywood Reporter about the alleged abuse his sister Dylan Farrow suffered as a seven-year-old.

Farrow criticised the media for ignoring the allegations made against the director in the past. Dylan Farrow made the claims public in 2014 in an open letter in the New York Times.

Charges against Allen were never pursued and he has always denied the allegations.

Earlier in the week, Blake Lively, star of Allen’s latest film Cafe Society described the director as “empowering to women”.

“It’s amazing what Woody has written for women … It’s very dangerous to factor in things you don’t know anything about. I could [only] know my experience”, Lively said.

During Cannes’ opening ceremony mid last week, French comedian Laurent Lafitte made a rape joke at Allen’s expense, though the actor and director seemed to take it in stride.

“I’m completely in favor of comedians making any jokes they want,” Allen said.

“I am a nonjudgmental, non-censorship person on jokes … I’m never offended … It would take a lot to offend me.”

As for public opinion, well, we’ve never quite managed to forget that Allen did marry his step-daughter, Soon-Yi Previn.

What do you make of it all? Should Allen have been investigated when the claims were made by his estranged daughter in 2014? Has his esteemed career prevented him from being caught out?
