Queensland Welcomes World Leaders for G20

Brisbane’s chance to shine on the world stage is here, with the arrival this morning of the first of the international leaders attending the  G20 Summit.

Premier Campbell Newman welcomed South Africa’s President His Excellency Jacob Zuma to Queensland at 4.20am and said the arrival highlighted how the G20 would have long lasting benefits to the State.

“It was a pleasure to meet Mr Zuma and welcome him to our great State this morning,” Mr Newman said. “Some of the world leaders attending here would not have visited Brisbane before and that makes this a unique opportunity for Queensland. “The next few days will give us a chance to build on Queensland’s global reputation as an exciting business destination and a hub for innovation and science.

“What that means is more jobs both now and for our children as we look to harness these opportunities.”

Mr Newman said the South African President was the first of more than 20 leaders touching down in Brisbane.

“The world’s leading economies are all represented at the G20 Summit and it is appropriate to hold the event here” he said. “Queensland is Australia’s engine room, with the economy growing quickly around our four pillars of tourism, agriculture, resources and construction.

“There will also be thousands of delegates including business and thought leaders along with international media here as well. “Our cultural celebrations are helping them see Brisbane as a vibrant and exciting city.”
