It’s Time to Stay Informed on Bushfire Activity

With bushfire season approaching, Queenslanders are being urged to utilise the Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) live fire website to stay informed on bushfire activity.

Police and Community Safety Minister Jack Dempsey said many residents will see smoke in the air and worry a bushfire could impact their home.

“By visiting the website, Queenslanders can see if there are vegetation fires in their area,” Me Dempsey said. “Emergency services will post community warning messages on the website during an incident and will inform residents of the steps they must take if there is a threat. “I urge all residents to familiarise themselves with the site. “It’s a great tool and will keep you up-to-date on what’s happening and what you need to do. “The RFSQ website also has tips on preparing a Bushfire Survival Plan and Bushfire Survival Kit and I urge all residents to look these up.”

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Commissioner Lee Johnson said surviving a bushfire was highly dependent on how well prepared landholders and families were before an event.

“We’re urging residents to be responsible and prepare before fire strikes,” Mr Johnson said. “This could be anything from cleaning up debris around the house, to reducing the fuel load on your land with a permit to burn. “I also reiterate Mr Dempsey’s message and encourage all Queenslanders to familiarise themselves with the RFSQ website and prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan.”

Mr Johnson said the RFSQ website indicated current fire incidents, provided instructions on how to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan, and explained the three types of alert messages.

“It is important for people to know what action to take when a bushfire approaches,” he said.   “It’s not too late to visit the site and familiarise yourself with the steps you and your family need to take to Prepare.Act.Survive.”
