Taking the pooch caravanning and camping is now easier than ever

Caravanning and camping offers a great outlet for the entire family, including the family pet, to come together and enjoy the best of the Australian great outdoors, writes Frida Horbino from the Caravan RV & Accommodation Industry of Australia.

Caravanning and camping offers a great outlet for the entire family, including the family pet, to come together and enjoy the best of the Australian great outdoors.

If you are one of Australia’s many dog lovers, finding a suitable caravan holiday park to accommodate your pet is a must. Thanks to more caravan holiday parks welcoming the family pooch that not only allow pets but also guarantees a good holiday experience is now easier than ever.

Karl Heyman, General Manager of Family Parks of Australia, said that Family Parks is now the most pet-friendly caravan park chain in Australia with at least 70% of its caravan holiday parks pet-friendly. “We find that being pet-friendly is a service valued by those who stay with us”, he said.

Before embarking on your caravanning and camping trip, it is very important that you do your research first, this will avoid any frustration in trying to find last minute accommodation for you and your pet.

“Calling the caravan holiday park in advance to make a reservation and to advise that you will be bringing your pet along is the first step in proper planning,” Karl added.

Be aware that some accommodation parks have pet policies in place that require certain behaviour and conditions to be met from both dog and owner. Getting in touch with the park, before you go to talk about your dog’s needs and temperament not only prepares the park owners, but gives you peace of mind that you and your companion will feel welcome when you arrive.

Crystal Brook Tourist Park (Vic), a member of the Family Parks chain located in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, recently became a pet-friendly park and has received very positive feedback from caravanner and camper pet lovers.

“Families and retirees have definitely embraced our pet-friendly policy and with our central location, Crystal Brook is the ideal location for anyone thinking of staying in Melbourne,” said Dennis Werthenbach from Crystal Brook Tourist Park.

Crystal Brook Tourist Park is surrounded by the charming Anderson Creek and with abundant bird life including lorikeets, king parrots, ducks, cockatoos and the resident kookaburras, Keith and “Nervous” Nelly who join guests for a feeding session every afternoon its a fun place to be!

Recent changes to BIG4 Holiday Parks Pet Policy have also allowed a more relaxed environment for pets. Leanne Mayne from BIG4 Trial Bay Tourist Park (NSW) mentioned that their caravan holiday park has adopted this policy and allow pets outside holiday periods.

“A lot of people have a perception that caravan holiday parks are mostly non pet-friendly but times have changed,” Leanne said.

BIG4 Trial Bay has designated pet-friendly powered sites, in a suitably shaded area, with specially marked bins for owners to dispose of their pets waste. For those looking to exercise their pets, the team at BIG4 Trial Bay can provide you with walking maps to nearby ‘dog-friendly’ beaches.

BIG4 Holiday Parks now also show an icon on their individual websites indicating whether a holiday park is pet-friendly or not. This is a helpful tool for travellers who are looking for pet-friendly options.

Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park, Qld is a haven for fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers, the pet-friendly Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park now offers guests a dog hydrobath, ensuring both owners and their dogs enjoy a pampered holiday.

Park owners, Marcus and Kay, say it’s a great holiday indulgence for your pet. “No more messing around with buckets, everyone getting wet, the dog escaping and your back hurting when you can have a nice clean pooch easily and comfortably!”

Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park also has two cabins that are pet-friendly, plus one dedicated washing machine for doggie blankets!

A truly tropical escape, Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park is located at the southern end of Kurrimine Beach, just south of Cairns in northern Queensland.
