Ponds Cold Cream – beauty regimes of the past vs the latest skincare trends

Remember Ponds Cold Cream – the dominating force in skincare in the 60s and 70s? Beauty trends come and go, and now as we become more and more informed we are trending towards organic skin care, nutrient based and there is an increasing demand for healthier skin products. So what skincare products have you always used, and what should you be looking for to get the best from a skin care product? Skin expert, Marian Rubock takes a closer look at this for us.

 

The myriad of lotions and potions that we use now can put the simple application of Ponds cold cream to shame as we cleanse, scrub, strip and moisturise our way to beautiful skin.

It may seem that since the late 30’s, when cosmetics became regulated that we have become more sophisticated with rejuvenating our skin unfortunately in many cases it has just the opposite effect.

The approach to our skin has been focus on just our skin from external sources and not internal support until just recently. We know that the skin functions best when it is supported both internally as well as externally so the just “treatment” approach only is always fraught with unhappy clients and aestheticians.

The treatment products used ( Inhouse and at home care), are designed to irritate and inflame the skin and interfere with its intelligence, with the inflammation that they cause they appear to reverse fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily plumping your skin – in fact they have the opposite effect as your skin goes into repair mode demanding more nutrient from its support layer, the dermis, and undertaking the task of resolving inflammation.

When we put synthetic skin care such as  Vitamin A e.g Rentin A, use alphahydroxy acids, laser our skin or use other harsh acid peels we are promoting this process and whilst we get addicted to the false gratification we also get hooked to the taught plumpness of the skin – I know I have been there myself and let me tell you that more is not better!

Ok so now that I have given you the not so good news what can we do about it to avoid this accelerated aging that we are creating?

  1. Look after your body – it feeds your skin. Drink filtered water, eat less processed foods, get 8-9 hours of sleep a night, eat good fats such as avocado &  brazil nuts and eat some protein each day such as fish, meat, eggs,  minimise your sugar and alcohol content and make sure that your digestion is processing and eliminating regularly.
  2. Skin care IS important but choose skin care not just because it has been marketed to you as ‘natural’,’ organic’, ‘no paraben’, etc but more because of what it contains . Look for Vitamins such as Vitamin E – protects against cellular damage, Vitamin C to boost collagen and elastin, Vitamin B – it increases circulation, Co Q10 is a great antioxidant that removes cell damage and amino acids such as Proline, Lysine, Valine – these maintain the health of your skin and are vital for your skin to exist and last but  not least Vitamin A – reverse sun damage and is the most potent of all antioxidants for our skin  however there is a catch – it needs to be in its natural form so expect your product to cost a little.

However it is definitely worse the effort to invest in your skin both with internal and external strategies and it health there is nothing else that stands between your and the outside world!
