Move over millennials, over 50’s more confident now than ever, study suggests

over 50's

a recent survey commissioned by Apia Insurance, it was found that Australia’s over 50’s have more confidence now than when they were younger.

The national survey revealed that 86% of Aussies over 50 feel their lives are more fulfilling now than in their younger years, 84% no longer sweat the small stuff, and four in five have shaken off self-doubt.

Head of Apia Customer Value, Geoff Keogh said, “Over 50s are too often typecast as set in their ways and stuck in the past, despite their extensive experience and perspective.”

“Age is nothing but a mind-set and as our research shows, we’re actually more confident than ever in challenging ourselves to try new things,” Geoff added.

The survey further discovered that 53% of Australians over 50 are more confident in travelling to new places now in comparison to their youth, 50% are more confident in learning to use technology and 44% have more confidence in their appearance.

“Our research demonstrates that today’s over 50s have an improved level of self-confidence in many facets of their lives – they have more confidence to travel, take new classes and even start their own businesses,” said Geoff.

Inspirational risk-taker, Sally Thibault, 60, decided to make a bold change after 50. At 55, she left her well-paid job to write a book, which later became an Amazon Best Seller.

“I failed high school and grew up believing I was never good enough, but after turning 50, I decided to prove everyone wrong,” said Sally.

“Following writing my first book, I started a new career as a success coach for women and later wrote a second book before becoming a trainer in Emotional Freedom Techniques. I’m now 60 and don’t plan to stop anytime soon,” Sally added.

Sally hopes her story will inspire others to push the boundaries of their comfort zone: “It doesn’t matter how old you are, you set your own limits – your mind is the only thing stopping you from achieving something great.”
