International Men’s Day – 19 November

Today is International Men’s Day – a day to focus on men’s and boys’ health, improve gender relations and highlight positive male role models.

This year, the theme is Working Together for Men and Boys. As well as being an awareness day, International Men’s Day is an occasion for men to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care while highlighting the discrimination against them.

International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 60 countries of the world and in Australia is coordinated by Warwick Marsh.

“We must find synergistic solutions to the challenges men and boys face, particularly in the western world where men and boys are falling behind in many areas,” Warwick says.

“Many commentators around the world are talking about a boy crisis. When you consider these six facts it is hard to disagree: 1. Boys are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD as girls. 2. Boys are dropping out of high school in record numbers. 3. Boys grades are lagging behind girls. 4. Boys have suicide rates four times higher than girls. 5. Boys are far more likely to end up in juvenile prisons than girl. 6. Boys are far more likely to be the victims of violent crime than girls. A pertinent example being the fact that boys are five times more likely than girls to die by homicide.”

Marsh continued, “We invite those who celebrate International Men’s Day to find innovative ways to work together to support the six pillars of International Men’s Day and help build a better world for our children.

  1. Working together to promote positive male role models.
  2. Working together to celebrate men’s positive contributions.
  3. Working together to focus on men’s health and well-being.
  4. Working together to highlight discrimination against males
  5. Working together to improve gender relations and improve gender equality.
  6. Working together to create a safer, better world.

International Men’s Day is an opportunity for people everywhere of goodwill to appreciate and celebrate the men in their lives and the sacrifices they make for their society and for the greater good of all. We encourage our friends to like us on the new official Facebook for International Men’s Day. Make someone’s day by wishing them “Happy International Men’s Day” on Facebook or otherwise.”
