Big Aussie Barbie Supports Prostate Cancer Research

Start prepping the barbie – the  Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) has launched its 2014 Big Aussie Barbie campaign.

The Big Aussie Barbie takes place every September during International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and this year the aim is to raise more than $1 million to support prostate cancer research, awareness and support programs.

International cricket legend Matthew Hayden is continuing his role as BIG AUSSIE BARBIE ambassador, urging Australians to fire up their barbecues in support of PCFA’s cause.

“I had the privilege to be part of the BIG AUSSIE BARBIE campaign last year and know I can do more in 2014 to help PCFA with the fight against prostate cancer,” said Mr Hayden.

“I’ve watched my own father bravely battle this disease and it breaks my heart to realise that thousands of Australian families are handed down a prostate cancer diagnosis every year. Every registered barbecue will help PCFA get closer to eradicating this disease from our community.”

Matthew Hayden will host the nation’s first “big Aussie barbie” for 2014 at the official launch event in Sydney on Friday 29th August.

Associate Professor Anthony Lowe, Chief Executive Officer of PCFA, says the BIG AUSSIE BARBIE campaign has helped PCFA sustain some of its most important projects.

“We have had the opportunity to improve our research, support and awareness programs thanks to the thousands of barbecues that have been hosted in honour of our campaign. The BIG AUSSIE BARBIE has great ambitions this year but we have no doubt that Australians will get outdoors and host as many barbecues as they can for our cause,” said Associate Professor Lowe.

Every year 22,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, joining close to 120,000 Australian men who are already living with the disease. Every man has a one in five chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by the time they are 85
