Australian PGA Championship Tees off on the Gold Coast

The Australian PGA Championship will tee off on the Gold Coast today with more than 30,000 visitors expected to attend and 400 million television viewers across 40 countries expected to watch the world-class sporting event.

This is the first time the tournament has been held on the Gold Coast in nearly 40 years. International and Australian golfers will swing into action at RACV Royal Pines Resort over the next three days.

Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said visitors will have the opportunity to see the world’s golfing elite, including the Gold Coast’s golfing great and winner of the 2013 US Masters, Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler and Marc Leishman, battle it out for the championship trophy.

Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of Australia Brian Thorburn said both the players and the PGA are looking forward to a new era for the tournament.

“With the likes of Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler and Marc Leishman competing in the tournament’s first year on the Gold Coast, this year’s Australian PGA Championship will be a huge celebration of golf and we’re hopeful the Gold Coast fans will support the event in their thousands,” he said.  “The tournament will mark Adam Scott’s first appearance in Australia since winning our country’s first green jacket, and it will be a significant occasion for all involved.”
