Art Gallery of Western Australia Exhibitions: Treasures of the Jewish Ghetto

A host of exciting exhibitions have kicked off at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) this month and will run through into early 2015.

Among them is Treasures of the Jewish Ghetto, a free exhibit which from today will display a collection of valuables that were hidden and forgotten about during World War II, when the two elderly Venetian Jewish religious leaders that hid them from the Nazis never returned from concentration camps.

The liturgical treasures, made by Venetian silversmiths using previous silver and bronze, date from the 1600s through to the early 1900s. They were unearthed during the restoration of Scola Spagnola (a Spanish Synagogue) a few years ago. Items such as Torah crowns, silver and bronze lamps and pairs of rommonim make up the collection, which has already been seen by art fans in New York, Houston, Venice, and more recently, Vienna.

Treasures of the Jewish Ghetto runs through until March.

Other exhibits include a contemporary photography exhibit with over 100 works which explores the theme of portraiture, titled new passports, new photography, and Australian Design: en years of the Peter Fogarty Fund, which takes a look at the exceptional works from the Fund including jewellery by esteemed jewellery artists, ceramics by Kisten Coehlo, glass by Jasper Dowding, and more. The collection has formed the heart of all the AGWA’s craft and design acquisitions over the last decade.

New passports, new photography runs through until 8 February and Australian Design until 9 March. Both exhibits (and plenty more) are free to the public.
