Life columnist; National Liquor News Tasting panellist and Chablis lover who fell into the liquor industry chiefly to buy cheap beer. Over a decade later and I’m still here, now studying towards a Masters of Wine Technology and Viticulture, and still spending all my money on beer and wine. For more reviews visit my site the Australian Wine Review at www.ozwinereview.com.au which is dedicated to talking about my obsession – everything vinous…

It’s always a pleasure to try a new wine with a great story behind it, a nod to the fact that wine, whether we always acknowledge it or not, is as much a human product as it is a natural one.

The soon-to-be-released Surveyor Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra’s Rymill is a perfect example of such a storied wine; the name a nod to third generation Rymill family member John Riddoch Rymill (pictured) who famously surveyed over 1000kms of the Antarctic coastline in the 1930s, before returning to Coonawarra as a pastoralist, founding the Equestrian Federation of Australia upon return.

Fittingly, the style and packaging of this super premium Cabernet befits such a fine gentlemen, the etched bottle and waxed cork about as classy a combination as you’ll find (though wax tops can be a messy proposition). The rich, yet firmly structured and powerful, Surveyor Cabernet is a suitably tasty wine to boot, easily the best release from the Rymill winery. The Surveyor is available from December 1 via the Rymill website www.rymill.com.au. Enjoy these Australian greats over your summer celebrations.
